Retiring to Live by the Sea and Write Books – My Fake Journal – Episode 18

As with most other mornings, I’m woken with a creative flash that would not be silenced. This time at three thirty. I gave that flash a stern talking-to, drank some water and went back to sleep. Series of children’s books. Whatever next. That remained to be the thread of thought/dream until I gave up and got up.

As I dressed and brushed teeth, the thoughts and inspiration grew and swirled around the bathroom. By the time I exited to put the kettle on I’d already settled on a title. It felt like a scene from that movie, ‘Limitless’.

I jotted a few words on the nearest sticky pad as I walked around opening curtains, ‘floofing’ seat cushions, putting on footwear, and wrote a few more when I was making the tea. I look upwards and say ‘Thanks.’ – not for the inspiration; that was all me. More for the fact that I know what to do with it, once it arrives.

I flip open the laptop while I’m sliding into the seat with my tea. Cloudy but dry. High tide at nine sixteen. Sunrise seven forty-seven. Picking up the machine and tea, I open the door with my elbow and step out onto the deck. It’s dark but I shuffle my way to the table and put my things down. I light two of the five storm lanterns and arrange myself on the sofa-seat.

My giant mug of ‘proper’ tea makes me smile. It reminds me of my Dad; how he taught me to make tea at a very young age. I needed a chair to reach the kitchen counter and boil the kettle. Years on he’d wake up up for High School with a cup of tea. He’d open the door, tell us the time, and put the tea down somewhere nearby. I chuckle. It was the tea that got me up.

Willow is staring at me from the window on her hind legs. Just a blur of fur for a belly. I should start thinking about taking her with me in the morning. I put my tea down, lock the door and walk to the sea wall steps. I go right for a few minutes where I know a massive hunk of driftwood washed up a few days ago. It was a perfect seat.

As I approached I saw it had been removed, so I made myself comfortable on a sea wall boulder to do some deep breathing, see in the sunrise and think about Dragons.
