Retiring to Live by the Sea and Write Books – My Fake Journal – Episode 24

As the nights close in I find myself not only writing more and more, but also wanting to make the most of the daylight.

After my morning beach walk yesterday, during which I met several dogs and their owners, including a white Pomeranian that looked like a furry football according to other dogs on the beach – I was making tea when I had a surprise visit.

Dad had driven over this way to see how I was doing, and after making lots of ‘builders tea’ and catching up, I took him to Cheddar for lunch and a walk.

Cheddar is a place that looks like it belongs in a fantasy book, like Lord of the Rings. It’s surrounded by ancient dark-stone cliffs and has water running through it in many places; brooks, rivers, streams. There are caves and walks, and the place is filled year round with tourists looking to see The Wookey Witch.

There are ancient stone cottages sitting right in the steep hills, and farmers graze sheep and goats, and produce milk, fudge and perfume amongst other things. There are woodworking shops, craft shops, even a Christmas shop, where I bought some ‘scented sand’ labelled ‘Violets’ which smelled really strongly of candy I used to eat when I was a kid.

Much of my family live in the surrounding towns and cities, so growing up we visited Cheddar a lot – and I think that’s why I love it. We chatted briefly to a cheerful local who was handing out ‘Cave Tour’ visits to passing tourists, before settling on a cafe for lunch.

Cheddar, as you can imagine is steep, so that was my exercise yesterday. There is a walk you can do; basically a staircase cut into the cliffs – but neither of us are remotely interested in doing that and we’d already worked up enough of an appetite.

This morning Dad’s up and about making tea; it was dark when we got back last night so I put him up in the guest bedroom. I get up and Willow is already draped over his lap while he drinks his tea and reads a local events paper on the breakfast table. I think that he’s enjoying the peace here too.

Away from the madding crowds.
