G is for… Gimmicks
Points, sins (recently changed to ‘syns’ to skew the negative term), freebies, days-off, meal replacements. They exist for convenience—because we don’t have time to weigh and measure. We don’t have time to count calories. They are all gimmicks, invented so that we don’t have to consider what we are putting in. Someone else has done the ‘hard’ work.
If we actually broke down all the gimmick diets, we’d see that under the hood they are all the same: calorie controlled and (generally) nutritionally balanced (see Diets*).
What I think we need to do is educate ourselves about calories and nutrition, BMRs and BMIs. We need to learn about the science behind it. We need to get less lazy about nutrition. Otherwise, what is it we’re learning? We’re learning how many points are in that snickers bar—not why we want it, whether we get any nutrition from it, or why we might feel guilty afterwards.
